Depression and Mood Concerns

Many kids and teens will go through periods of sadness and low mood. When these concerns become more frequent, last longer, or impact daily life, it may be time to seek support.

Depression in Kids and Teens

While most people think of sadness when they hear the term "depression," it can actually present with a range of emotions, including irritability, hopelessness, shame, and self-doubt. Kids and teens may struggle with sleep, appetite, and motivation, and may lose interest in activities they previously enjoyed. Some have difficulty concentrating, thinking clearly, or making decisions.

Effective Treatments

Most young people respond well to evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). CBT helps identify and shift the thought patterns that contribute to low mood, while building positive coping skills. ACT focuses on helping kids and teens relate differently to difficult thoughts and feelings, so they can move toward what matters to them even when things feel hard. Treatment often works best when parents and caregivers are involved, so the whole family is aligned and moving in the same direction.
